In Case You Missed It....

Just in case you missed this...there is a Secretary of Commerce.

WASHINGTON (CNN) – By unanimous consent, the Senate Tuesday confirmed former Washington Gov. Gary Locke to be Secretary of Commerce.

Locke was President Barack Obama's third choice — New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson took his name out of consideration on January 5, citing the distraction of a federal investigation into ties to a company that has done business with his state.

Republican Sen. Judd Gregg of New Hampshire — Obama's second Commerce pick — cited "irresolvable conflicts" with the administration over the economic stimulus bill when he withdrew his name from consideration on February 12.

Mark Your Calendars....Again

Here comes a new book....

NEW YORK -- Nobel laureate's Al Gore's follow-up to his best-selling "An Inconvenient Truth," originally planned for last spring, is coming out this fall with a new title.

Publisher Rodale Books announced Tuesday that the former vice president's book, "Our Choice," will be released in November, printed on 100 percent recycled paper. The book, which proposes solutions to the global warming crisis documented in "Inconvenient Truth," was called "The Path to Survival" when first announced two years ago.

"An Inconvenient Truth" was published in 2006 and was a companion book to the Academy Award-winning documentary of the same name.

What Say You....Harry?

Okay Harry has decided to move forward with the bill regarding AIG bonuses. Isn't that super? I wonder when Congress and the President are going to take responsibility for writing the amendment in the bill, signing it and helping create the "outrage mob mentality?" I won't hold my breath on this one.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said a bill to retrieve $165 million in bonuses to top AIG executives remains a Senate priority and will be pursued even if it doesn't happen before the April recess — putting him somewhat at odds with the Obama administration and Senate Republicans.

Reid dismissed any suggestion that public anger over the bonuses has dissipated and vowed that the Senate will take up a bill being crafted by Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus (D-Mont.) and ranking Republican Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa).

The White House has said that the bonuses may be difficult to legally recover, and Republicans are likely to oppose the bill — Budget Committee ranking member Judd Gregg (R-N.H.) on Monday called the idea "not appropriate," and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said it should be slowed down.

But Reid said it was congressional pressure that prompted several AIG executives to voluntarily return tens of millions in bonuses, which he called "a start." But he also cautioned that Republican support will be necessary.

"The issue's not over, and that's an understatement," Reid said. "I think AIG represents everything that's bad about corporate America — the greed and even perhaps the corruption, and I think it's something that is clearly not over yet. But I do believe that what we've done is important and what we intend to do may even be more important ... This is an issue that's simply not going to go away. We're going to stay on top of it." And you Reid represent what is wrong with the Senate.

Reid said he has "no problem" taking a go-slow approach to the bill and allowing it a few days to be scrutinized by the Finance Committee, since Baucus has received "several ideas" on how to proceed.

There is no pressure or need to finish the bill before lawmakers recess for two weeks in April, Reid added. We only rush big spending bills.

"If we don't finish it today or tomorrow, it doesn't mean we can't finish it some other time," he said.

France Is Mad At Us Now....What Next?

Oh, someone help this guy out...

President Obama wrote Jacques Chirac saying he was looking forward to working with the former French president in the coming four years(?)
Monsters and Critics reported:
US President Barack Obama has indirectly praised former French president Jacques Chirac's fierce opposition to the US-led invasion of Iraq, the online edition of the daily Le Figaro reported on Thursday.

In a letter described by Chirac as 'very nice,' Obama wrote, "I am certain that we will be able to work together, in the coming four years, in a spirit of peace and friendship to build a safer world."

The use of the word 'peace' was taken to be an indirect reference to Chirac's stance against the US intervention in Iraq, which Obama had also opposed as senator.
No Pasaran has more on the bizarre letter to Chirac.

French newspaper Le Figaro is horrified at the faux pas. And, current French President Sarkozy was appparently upset with the letter.
Europumas and Free Republic has the latest:

Now Obama has insulted French President Sarkozy!

Oh no! Obama sent a letter to Chirac, saying he looks forward to working with him the next four years. Le Figaro, French newspaper is horrified at the faux pas. Doesn't Obama ever consult his staff before acting? Sarkozy is the President there! It's like Sarko writing to George Bush and saying he looks forward to working with him. Chirac is the FORMER president.

Mark Your Calendars....

Mark your calendars, he may be coming to a school near you.

Obama to Deliver Three Commencement Addresses.

President Obama is going back to school in his first year in office. He will be delivering commencement speeches at three universities this May, touching three distinct parts of the country and three different types of educational institutions.

The White House said on Friday that Mr. Obama will speak first at Arizona State University, in Tempe, a public school, on May 13. His next stop, on May 17, will be at a private university, Notre Dame, in South Bend, Ind. Former President George W. Bush delivered his first commencement speech as the nation’s chief executive there in 2001.

President Obama will conclude his tour at a service academy — the United States Naval Academy, in Annapolis — on May 22.

UPDATE

SOUTH BEND, IN - The University of Notre Dame is sticking with its invitation to President Barack Obama to speak at its May 17 commencement despite criticism from some Roman Catholics that his views on abortion and stem-cell research run counter to Catholic teachings

The Cardinal Newman Society, an advocacy group for orthodoxy on Catholic college and university campuses, calls the invitation to Obama "a scandal and an outrage."

As of Monday evening, the society said more than 33,000 people had signed its online petition urging Notre Dame's president, the Rev. John Jenkins, to withdraw the invitation.

Jenkins issued a statement Monday saying the invitation does not mean that Notre Dame supports all of Obama's positions. In an e-mail to The Associated Press, Notre Dame spokesman Dennis Brown added, "I don't foresee a circumstance in which we would rescind the invitation."

In Case You Missed It....

Well, in case you missed this on Friday!

Federal regulators seized two of the nation’s largest corporate credit unions late Friday after discovering the institutions' losses on mortgage-related securities were greater than previously believed, the Wall Street Journal reported.

U.S. Central Corporate Federal Credit Union and Western Corporate Federal Credit Union were taken into conservatorship by federal regulators. The two institutions, which provide services not to the general public, but to retail credit unions, have a total of $57 billion in assets, the paper reported.

Michael E. Fryzel, chairman of the National Credit Union Administration, said that the government’s swift action was necessary to ensure the stability of both the credit union system and the insurance fund responsible for backing up retail-credit union deposits, according to the Journal.

The two institutions, Fryzel said, weren’t accurately estimating their losses and put the system at risk. Fryzel said top management at both institutions would be replaced, the Journal reported.

The Ford Model T versus the SUV

WASHINGTON -- What's more fuel-efficient, a Ford Model T or a modern-day sport utility vehicle? President Barack Obama says the Model T, but his comparison is a stretch.

Obama, touring a California electric car plant on Thursday, said, "The 1908 Model T _ think about this _ the 1908 Model T earned better gas mileage than the typical SUV in 2008."

"Think about that: 100 years later, and we're getting worse gas mileage, not better, on SUVs," Obama said.

Ford's own Web site says the Model T's mileage ranged from 13 to 21 miles per gallon. Some Tin Lizzie enthusiasts who still drive the vehicles report numbers closer to the bottom end of that range. A typical SUV sold in 2008 gets 18.7 miles per gallon.

But even comparing vehicles that are so different is misleading, say auto industry officials and fans of Henry Ford's pioneering car.

The 1909 Model T _ which debuted in September 1908 _ weighed 1,200 pounds. A 1909 Model T ad told consumers it could reach 40 to 50 miles per hour on its 4-cylinder, 20-horsepower engine. It had a 10-gallon gasoline tank with an advertised range of 200 to 225 miles carrying four passengers.

By contrast, a typical SUV sold in 2008 weighs about 4,600 lbs and carries equipment not dreamed of 100 years ago: emission controls, safety equipment like air bags, antilock brakes and an aerodynamic body. Model Ts featured hand-crank starters and tail lamps fueled by kerosene.

"It's not a comparison that holds up well today," said Ford spokeswoman Jennifer Moore.

Moore said that by comparison, a 2009 Ford Escape achieves 20 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway while providing 200 horsepower, a tenfold improvement over the Model T.

Obama's line echoed a 2003 advertisement from the Sierra Club which was published around Ford Motor Co.'s 100th anniversary. The ad compared the fuel efficiencies of a Model T and a Ford Explorer and urged the Dearborn, Mich., company to "use existing technology to make cleaner cars that go farther on a gallon of gas."

"The point is that the average Ford today does not compare favorably to the Model T's fuel economy," said Dan Becker, a former director of the Sierra Club's Global Warming and Energy Program.

Many Model T enthusiasts report varying gas mileage levels _ from 10 mpg to 25 mpg _ and note that dirt roads commonly found in the early 20th century would have reduced the fuel efficiency.

Tom Miles, of Albuquerque, N.M., the vice president of the Model T Ford Club of America, says he typically gets 12 mpg on his 1926 Model T Touring car and the fuel efficiency suffers when he drives uphill.

When he heard Obama make the comparison, he thought, "Well, yeah, but you've got to look at all the other things modern cars do."

Jay Klehfoth, chief executive officer of the Centerville, Ind.-based Model T Ford Club of America, said he averages about 25 mpg on his four Model Ts. But with an array of modern regulations, he noted, "You couldn't build a Model T today because the government wouldn't let you put it on the road."

Hey Obama...Here Comes Maxine....

The amendment that would not go away...

Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif., called on President Obama on Friday to explain what happened when a provision was added to his economic stimulus bill last month that allowed AIG employees to receive $165 million in bonuses.
Hey, here is an explanation, Congress voted on it and Obama signed it into law. Should have read articles Maxine, there were many about the bonues over the last few months.

Waters' comments were the strongest criticism yet from a Democrat over a controversy that continues to grow.

Sen. Christopher Dodd, D-Conn, confessed Wednesday to adding language to a spending cap in the stimulus bill that specifically excluded executive bonuses agreed to before the bill's passage. But he added that Treasury officials forced him to make the change to protect the government from potential lawsuits.
I did not put it there, they did, no they did, they did, it was changed...

It was a reversal from Dodd's position a day earlier, when he strongly denied he had anything to do with adding the provision.

"They've got some explaining to do," Waters told Joe Scarborough on his WABC radio show Friday morning. "And I think the president is going to have to clarify to the American public what took place between Treasury and Mr. Dodd.
How about the President explain why he crammed this bill down everyone's throat, no one read it, it was voted on, waited a few days to sign it because it was Valentine's Day and now lets fake the outrage. Congress and the President should apologize for serving themselves and not the American people.

"Obviously, there appears to be some sort of an agreement that they would protect AIG from having to give those bonuses. I don't know who said what and when," she added. "Chris Dodd said he wrote the language but that he was pressured practically by Treasury. Maybe the president is not up to speed on what is going on, but I think it is going to have to be clarified."
Hey Maxine, maybe if you read it, you would have seen it.

The provision added to the stimulus bill was a broad measure that applied to all companies receiving bailout money, not just AIG, though the AIG bonuses in particular have caused outrage in Washington and around the country after the insurance giant received more than $170 billion in federal aid.

The U.S. government now has an 80 percent stake in the company, which was hit hard by the downturn in the housing sector and by the failure of complex securities based on risky mortgages.

Hey My DVD's Won't Play

DVD cheapskate contiues....

The movie industry's digital protection schemes have turned President Obama's present for British Prime Minister Gordon Brown into little more than a set of coasters.

British newspapers earlier this month made hay out of the supposedly unequal exchange of gifts between the two leaders during Brown's visit to Washington. Brown gave an ornamental pen holder with an indirect tie to the Oval Office desk — both items were made from the timber of sister ships — and a first-edition set of a seven-volume biography about Winston Churchill.

Obama responded with a DVD set featuring 25 classic American movies. "About as exciting as a pair of socks," declared The Daily Mail.

Now it turns out Brown can't play the discs because of region-specific limitations, The Daily Telegraph reports.

DVD players are coded to limit themselves to material meant for specific geographic areas. The United States and Canada are Region 1. Western and Central Europe are Region 2.

Players sold in one region aren't supposed to play discs sold in another. Had the same sort of protection applied to Brown's gift, Obama would need a special key sold only in Europe to open the Churchill books.

People willing to experiment with hacks can go online to find relatively easy ways around region-coding prohibitions on discs. But a spokesman for the prime minister referred a Telegraph writer to the White House for "technical assistance."

Let's Be Friends....Iran

Glad he found time in his schedule to do this.

A New Year, A New Beginning
President Obama released a special video message for all those celebrating Nowruz. Translated "New Day," Nowruz marks the arrival of spring and the beginning of the New Year for millions in Iran and other communities around the world.  This year, the President wanted to send a special message to the people and government of Iran on Nowruz, acknowledging the strain in our relations over the last few decades. "But at this holiday we are reminded of the common humanity that binds us together," he says.

After committing his administration to a future of honest and respectful diplomacy, he continues on to address Iran's leaders directly: "You, too, have a choice.  The United States wants the Islamic Republic of Iran to take its rightful place in the community of nations.  You have that right -- but it comes with real responsibilities, and that place cannot be reached through terror or arms, but rather through peaceful actions that demonstrate the true greatness of the Iranian people and civilization.  And the measure of that greatness is not the capacity to destroy, it is your demonstrated ability to build and create."

I'll Take Blame Game for $1000 Alex...

It was the Treasury Department that let them have bonuses...it was Dodd...it was the little green man....it was Obama signing the bill into law without reading it...the text reappeared modified.

Not to be left out, the Speaker Potato takes ZERO responsibility. Look at that, another one goes under the bus...hey...hey

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, speaking at her weekly presser this morning, says she had nothing - nothing -- to do with Chris Dodd's AIG amendment.

“If you want to talk about what happened in the Senate, go to the Senate and talk to them,” she said when asked about her possible involvement with the weakened "clawback" provision, which was approved by both Houses as part of the stimulus conference report.

“This was never brought to conference,” she said -- rejecting Dodd's initial claim that his anti-bonus amendment was stricken, without his say-so, during the conference process..

“This never came to the House side, and you can talk to any of our conferees. It’s a matter of fact and record,” she said.
