And We're Off and Running...

And we are off for 2009.....

"It's just a long list of spending items. Not a real economic stimulus job creation bill. It's line after line after line of favorite liberal spending programs, and it amounts to a big government bill – not a job creation bill."
Senator Vitter on the stimulus package
Just a big giant pile of PORK!

"He will have significant Republican backing."
Senator Specter on Eric Holder.
Way to go. Another real winner that is getting approved!

"I'm really happy to be part of a team, but what I have to think about now is everything I say—I am the vice president. I am not the president — so everything I say reflects directly on the administration. And so I may have strongly held views the president may not have. And they should be done—that should be done between us, not for me to, uh, but yeah."
Joe Biden in an interview with Bob Schieffer
Lets see if he can actually stick to what he says here! Gaffe meter is running! Uh - yeah!

Much of the plan, they add, will simply replace other spending by state governments or the private sector. It's a stretch to call this a stimulus package. I've dubbed it a nonstimulus package.''
Rep. Tom Price
Again just a big Oinker!

"Regardless of where anyone stands on taxpayer-funded contraception, there is no question that it has NOTHING to do with the economy."
House Minority Leader John Boehner

NO way, really! Someone needed to tell Speaker lady that! Guess she is bummed that it got cut!

"While I believe Mr. Geithner when he expressed regret for his failure to pay these taxes, he doesn't explain why the failure happened. This embarrassing ‘mistake’ occurred despite Mr. Geithner’s receiving annual and quarterly documents from the IMF and signing annual tax allowance requests that were supposed to serve as reminders about his tax obligations. He also failed to pay these taxes despite having accountants review his tax filings, and despite using software to prepare his tax returns. Had he not been nominated for Treasury Secretary, it’s doubtful that he would have ever paid these taxes.”
Senator Byrd on why he did not vote to confirm Geithner
I have to say this surprised me. I give Byrd a thumbs up for this! And I actally agree with what he said! I am going to drink now!

"Finally, I want to mention differences of perception of different people who have been found to have unsettled tax liabilities.  During last year’s presidential campaign, we read a lot about a man named Joe the Plumber who hailed from Ohio.  When this man was found to have a tax lien for state taxes, some portrayed it as evidence that his opinions on national tax policy were irrelevant.  However, this nominee’s tax problems have been revealed to be much larger than Joe’s, and this nominee’s defenders still insist he is the only man for the job of Treasury secretary.  I ask unanimous consent that an article discussing this inconsistency by Jonah Goldberg appearing in National Review Online be printed in the record."
Senator Chuck Grassley
Good job Chuck!

"The mayor of Chicago says you're cuckoo."
Campbell Brown to Gov of Illinois in an interview
Oh Campbell Brown - no bias, no bull! Sorry, but I still can't believe she has her own show.

A spokeswoman for Puerto Rican Gov. Luis Fortuno, Michelle Cuevas, said Tuesday that he would oppose any proposal to hold them in the U.S. island territory.
Responding to taking any GITMO prisoners
Why not? They are harmless, aren't they?

"As Speaker Nancy Pelosi put it, "We won the election. We wrote the bill." So they did. Republicans should let them take all of the credit."
Let them have it all!

"That is my deadline and if we do not have agreement and a bill by then, we won't have a recess. We cannot leave here without an economic recovery package for the American people, because, as the President-elect has said, the consequences are very severe. We lose 500,000 jobs a month -- a month, so this is long overdue. We begged President Bush to take action. The recession has only deepened. We must act, and we must act now."
Speaker Pelosi on the stimulus package
Oh yes, you get your deadline met. No worries how you are really sticking it to the American people. Need to make deadline of President's Day, so we can have another "historical moment" because you want to! I am sure you "begged" Bush. Stop making me laugh here!

“Let’s not exploit this economic crisis to push through legislation that will increase the size and scope of the federal government above and beyond anything our country has ever seen in its 233 years.”
Rep Ken Calvert
Why not? We need to make that deadline on that "historical day." Besides people who are against this are mean and don't want to give jobs to people or so I have heard! Ugh!

"I hope that we can continue to strengthen this plan before it gets to my desk."
Obama said.
Hmmm....what when it becomes $4 trillion dollars and food stamps for life?

"Stimulus is in the eye of the beholder."
Senator Harry Reid
WTH!

Sen. John Kerry says Democrats should ignore Republicans’ demands about the stimulus plan if they’re going to vote against it anyway.
Real bi-partisan there John. That's the spirit! Go negative!

"Global Warming. It is the hoax. It is bad science. It is a high jacking of public policy. It is no joke. It is the greatest scam in history."
John Coleman, founder of The Weather Channel
Yeah - a voice of reason! Watch out Madoff, a scam has just over taken you!

Are You Kidding Me?

I read this article earlier and I decided to put the entire thing up because quite frankly it is ridiculous. I mean really ridiculous! Happy 2009!

President Obama and a key outside ally are stepping up efforts to ensure passage of the massive economic stimulus package, reaching out to Congress with both carrots and sticks.

While the president and his top aides are using all the trappings of the office, courting members through phone calls, cocktail parties, West Wing sit-downs and even a politically mixed Super Bowl party, liberal groups are dispensing with the niceties and seeking to drive a wedge between Republicans and one of the right’s most influential leaders.

Politico has learned that tomorrow Americans United for Change, a liberal group, will begin airing radio ads in three states Obama won — Ohio, Pennsylvania and Nevada — with a tough question aimed at the GOP senators there: Will you side with Obama or Rush Limbaugh?

Every Republican member of the House chose to take Rush Limbaugh’s advice,” says the narrator after playing the conservative talk radio giant’s declaration that he hopes Obama “fails.”

“Every Republican voted with Limbaugh — and against creating 4 million new American jobs. We can understand why a extreme partisan like Rush Limbaugh wants President Obama’s Jobs program to fail — but the members of Congress elected to represent the citizens in their districts? That’s another matter. Now the Obama plan goes to the Senate, and the question is: Will our Senator"—here the ad is tailored by state to name George Voinovich in Ohio, Arlen Specter in Pennsylvania, and John Ensign in Nevada—"side with Rush Limbaugh too?”

Asked to respond, Limbaugh had a message for his party.
“Senate Republicans need to understand this is not about me,” he wrote in an email. “It is about them, about intimidating them, especially after the show of unity in House. It is about the 2010 and 2012 elections. This is an opportunity for Republicans to redefine themselves after a few years of wandering aimlessly looking for a ‘brand’ and identity.”

Brad Woodhouse, the Democratic strategist who is overseeing the ad campaign
, said: “The House Republicans put their Senate colleagues in the crosshairs because they decided to play politics rather than do the right thing.”

The radio buy comes on the heels of TV campaign by Americans United for Change and other liberal groups that began Thursday and targets GOP senators in Maine, New Hampshire, Alaska and Iowa, and another by the Laborers Union aimed at Senators in Iowa, Kentucky, Nevada and Tennessee; both designed to rally support for the stimulus package.

As their allies take to the airwaves, Obama and his top aides are conducting their own internal inside-outside lobbying effort.

The president devoted hours to closed-door meetings with House and Senate Republicans Tuesday, had leaders of both parties over to the White House for cocktails on Wednesday and hosted yet more members of Congress for a bill-signing in the East Room Thursday.

All the while, he’s been dialing individual members on the phone and his top aides, including Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel and National Economic Council chief Larry Summers, are conducting what one Senate Democratic leadership aide described as near-constant diplomacy on the Hill via both phone calls and personal meetings.

A few chosen members of Congress of both parties will receive the ultimate in White House wooing this weekend when they join Obama Sunday night in the residence to watch the Super Bowl. The list is an ideologically diverse one. Politico has learned it will include, among other opposites, conservative Rep. Trent Franks (R-AZ) and liberal Amy Klobuchar (D-MN).

More publicly, Obama is making his case for the bill through a series of events that this week included a high-profile White House meeting and speech before a group of the nation’s top CEOs. Friday, Obama along with Vice President Joe Biden will deliver remarks sure to touch on the economy at an East Room event focused on middle class and working families.
Can't wait to see what Joe has to say!

From the briefing room podium, press secretary Robert Gibbs has been underscoring the need for the stimulus with a series of sobering statistics. Wednesday it was some state unemployment rates and Thursday he noted that more Americans are on unemployment since records began being kept in 1967. Friday, he’ll surely turn to what is expected to be a dismal economic growth report from the quarter of 2008.

Senate Republicans acknowledge that they’ll lose some of their members on the first vote.

“We’re in a little different spot than the House in that we have a handful of Republicans who have all but committed to supporting the package,” said a Senate GOP aide.

The aide declined to say who, but speculation on both sides of the aisle is centered on a group of northeasterners -- Senators Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe of Maine, Sen. Judd Gregg (NH) and Specter.

Daily Guidance...Confidant, Not Deputy President

Well today while out on the web, I came across an article on VP Biden (I can't even say that out loud) and I was so excited to see (not really) that he wanted the public to know that he will be disclosing his locations on a daily basis. Super! I guess we can all sleep better tonight.

On January 24, 2009, two of the number two man's aides issued a "daily guidance" (WTH?) e-mail to reporters. It gave details on where he had been for the last three days (really did anyone really care?) and where he's going over the weekend. And the cherry on top was, they are committed to making this a habit. Yipeee!

The VP's communications office will send out a daily guidance (again WTH?) each evening for the following day. Biden has promised to be more open than the previous VP, Richard Cheney.

And for anyone keeping track, according to the guidance e-mail (again WTH?) it was learned that to date, he has administered the oath of office to seven Cabinet members on Wednesday, went to his daily intelligence briefing with Obama on Thursday and Friday. On Friday he also lunched with Obama and attended a budget meeting. According to the guidance e-mail, Biden had no public events on Saturday. On Sunday he appeared on CBS, "Face the Nation." No word yet on when any botox parties are scheduled for.

And in case you missed in other news, "Biden is confidant, not Deputy President" (again WTH?). I am not sure what a Deputy President is. Maybe those offices are located right next to the office of the president-elect.

In his confidant, but not Deputy President role, Biden hopes to help the president shape policy and also hopes that he is the last person in the room for every key decision that Obama makes. (So, if Obama wants to divide Iraq into three countries, I think we will know why.). Biden has stated that this is how it has worked so far in the early days of the Obama presidency. (What? 5, 6 days?).

I wonder if the "daily guidance e-mail" will keep track of the gaffes? Hmmm....

The Only Man for the Job?

If I hear one more time that Geithner is the ONLY person on this planet that can save the economy, I am going to pull my hair out. With all of the people in the United States of America this is the only man that can save us? A man who can not even use Turbo Tax? Super! I have been amazed by all of the comments about Mr. Geithner and of course I just have to share.

“On the matter of Mr. Geithner’s failure to pay certain self-employment taxes, I find it completely unacceptable. I’m a former tax commissioner, I’ve dealt with hundreds of cases like this one, and in normal times that alone would lead me to oppose his confirmation. But these are not normal times, and I personally don’t think we can afford a further delay in the filling of this critically important position.
Senator Kent Conrad of North Dakota on why he voted for Geithner.
In other words, just accept anybody whether they are ethical or not because the economy is going down the tubes and only Tim can save us all. Good grief!

"I don't think I've seen enough there to cause a problem."
Republican Senate Policy Committee Chairman, John Ensign
Maybe we should take a look at your taxes Mr. Ensign. Have you been writing off your kids sleepover camp too or at least trying?

“My expectation is that Tim Geithner will be confirmed.”
President Obama
Why, because you chose him and will not accept anything else?

“It’s an honest mistake.”
Senator Max Baucus
So, if I owed taxes and did not pay them, when the IRS comes to collect, I just tell them "it was an honest mistake." This is the lamest excuse ever.

“A lot to do about nothing. I just find it to be really unfortunate because here is an extraordinary qualified guy who we really do want to have in leadership here in Washington.”
Senator Judd Gregg
He is so qualified that he can't even do his taxes correctly! I guess that makes him "extraordinary qualified."

“He is the right person to lead our economic recovery during these challenging times. He’s dedicated his career to our country and served with honor, intelligence and distinction."
Press Secretary Robert Gibbs
Is the "new honor" to cheat on your taxes? To me this shows lack of judgment and oh yes, lack of intelligence. And as for leading, you mean how he helped with the first bailout? And also relaxed some of the regulations for CitiCorp? Yes, lead us into more bailouts! Blank checks for all!

And then of course the nominee had some great words of wisdom to share.

"President Obama – backed by the conclusions of a broad range of economists – believes that China is manipulating its currency,"
his Treasury secretary-designate Timothy Geithner said Thursday in written testimony to senators quizzing him over his pending confirmation.
Hey Tim, we owe them a lot of money and really knocking them is not such a good thing to do in these economic times. But hey you know best! And who are these "economists?"

At least there are some people that are showing concerns.

“Geithner’s errors and/or misjudgments on tax returns since 2001 make him unfit to serve as secretary of the Treasury.”
John Berlau, a tax and financial affairs analyst at conservative Competitive Enterprise Institute in Washington.
I agree!

"To say this is insignificant – it's not."
Senator Jeff Sessions

“He’s got a real problem with me and my constituents. He may be a smart guy, but the average person on the street sees that he hasn’t paid his taxes. It’s a very bad thing for a guy who’s running the Treasury to be in that position.”
Senator George Voinovich

“It’s bad enough we have a Ways and Means chairman with a selective memory about his own tax returns – now we may have a Treasury secretary who either needs to upgrade his tax preparation software or listen a little more carefully to his accountant.”
Pete Sepp, Vice President of the National Taxpayers Union
To me this is sad. Why is Rangel still doing his job or attempting too? Why aren't these people in jail?

So, remember if you owe taxes, just say, "it's an honest mistake" and you too can one day become Secretary of the Treasury. Also, at this posting, Turbo Tax has confirmed they will not be using Tim as a spokesperson as he has shown he can not use the software!

Also, I would like to thank the Senators on the committee that voted "no" on Geithner. It will be interesting to see the full Senate Vote. The five senators who voted “no” are all Republicans: Charles E. Grassley of Iowa, Jon Kyl of Arizona, Jim Bunning of Kentucky, Pat Roberts of Kansas and Michael B. Enzi of Wyoming.

Pardon Me...Is this the Nonstop to Nowhere?

On Saturday I was in the car pretty much most of the day, but on some of the stations they were giving updates of the train ride for the President-Elect and the Vice-President Elect. For some reason I could not get the thought of Judy Garland, from the Harvey Girls (I am an old MGM musical person), singing Atcheson Topeka and the Santa Fe out of my head. All aboard. When I had heard enough of the updates I switched to my iPod music and the first song that came up seemed to be very fitting and I laughed.

The song was recorded in 1992 by Faster Pussycat. They came out of Los Angeles and were considered a "hair band." Aqua Net rules! The song title is, "Nonstop to Nowhere." Anyway, the first few lines of the song I found to be fitting.

I'm on the lame train
I got a first-class ticket on the nonstop to nowhere
Where it takes me I don't know

Why do I feel that we are on the lame train on a nonstop to nowhere? Where are we going? Mail bailouts, handouts, stimulus packages, honest mistakes, government is the only answer, Clintonites, etc.

I found a line at the end of the song that I found to be fitting.

Mr. Conductor Will you help me off this train?
Well I believe I'm on the wrong one and it's taking me down the drain

So I think I am going to jump over to track 29 and get on the Chatanooga Choo! Choo! All aboard!

"Nonstop to Nowhere" as recorded by
Faster Pussycat 1992

CHORUS 1:
I'm on the lame train
I got a first-class ticket
on the nonstop to nowhere
Where it takes me I don't know
I guess the tracks you make are your own

Well it's 5 o'clock in the morning And I can't fall asleep again
Times are changing and moving fast Way too fast for me
Seems like only yesterday I was skipping school and stealing gasoline
I've been talking I guess you call it Talking a white lie
One minute I'm on top of the world And the next thing you know

CHORUS 1:
Sometimes I just sit and daydream And I just slip away from here
If only I had a crystal ball Or could invent a time machine
I'd go into the future Take a good look around
And see what life has in store for me
I've been walking I guess you call it Walking a thin line
One minute I'm on top of the world And the next thing you know

CHORUS 2:
I'm on the lame train
I got a first-class ticket on the nonstop to nowhere
Where it takes me I don't know
I guess the tracks you make are your own
It's like a chain gang going I know the exit
But my problems seem to follow me
Wherever I go Nonstop to nowhere
I don't believe the preachers They're just sticking out their hands
I don't believe the government And who the hell's this Uncle Sam?
Mr. Conductor Will you help me off this train?
Well I believe I'm on the wrong one and it's taking me down the drain
CHORUS 2:

Learn Something....Please

So on this lovely Saturday in California, I drove my sister to the walk-in doctor's office for her foot problem. There must have been about 14 people in the waiting room. While I was sitting there waiting, I was listening two women, around early 20's to mid 20's having a chat about the upcoming administration and all of the excitement.

While having their discussion, they started talking about Hillary Clinton. They think she will be a good Secretary of State because she would be the "first woman" Secretary of State. Yes, that is correct, the first woman Secretary of State. Wow – imagine that. As I was trying not laugh while reading Sports Illustrated from June*, they continued on. They both thought it would have been better if Hillary Clinton was African American. Not only would she be the first woman Secretary of State, but the first African American. I guess Colin Powell was pink and Madeleine Albright was really a man? And Condi Rice, well she just does not count.

Well, I have to say I started laughing out loud. These things happen. They both looked over at them. I told them Albright was the first woman, Powell was the first African American and Condi Rice was not only a woman, but African American. And two out of three of them were chosen by President George W. Bush. They looked at me like I had two heads and then they started talking low saying I was making up what I told them and who was Condi Rice! So, congratulations to Hillary, if you are confirmed, you will be the first woman Secretary of State!

*Why do doctors offices have the worst magazines? Either they are ones no one would buy or they are issues from two years ago?

Congrats Ted, By The Way Who Are You?

Congratulations to Ted Kaufman. For those of you who may not know who Ted is, well he is the brand spanking new Senator from the state of Delaware. Way to go Ted!

Now here is just a small tiny bio on the man Ted. When Senator Joe “Gaffetastic” Biden was elected to the Senate, he asked his friend Ted to take a leave of absence from his job at DuPont to help him out and Ted obliged. Ted not only gave him one year, but 20. He served on Gaffetastic’s Senate staff from 1973-1994, including 19 years as Chief of Staff, and has held senior positions in all of Biden’s national campaigns. Ted is 69.

Ted is a graduate of Duke University and the MBA program at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. Ted is a senior lecturing fellow at Duke and since 1995 has served by presidential appointment as a charter member of the Broadcasting Board of Governors. Ted also heads a political and management consulting firm based in Wilmington, Delaware.

So today Ted Kaufman was escorted into the Senate by Gaffetastic and Delaware Senator Joe Carper. No word on whether Joe and Ted were skipping and holding hands into the Senate chamber. Vice-President Dick Cheney swore him in. And no smack down between Gaffetastic and Vice-President Dick Cheney took place. Would have been great to see on C-Span.

And of course you could not welcome anyone new to the Senate without Harry “Zombie” Reid giving some words of wisdom or lack there of.

“In this time of great consequence, Senator Kaufman’s 20 years of experience, and the wisdom accumulated over those years will serve him well as he serves the people of Delware in the United States Senate. Senator Kaufman, welcome home.” Congratulations Ted, you are no longer the bridesmaid, you are now the bride! And what consequences?

Reid also added this, “One reason Biden (Gaffetastic) has had the strength that he has had over these years is because his back was always protected by Ted Kaufman.”  Protected from what? The law? Illegal activities? Over use of botox?

Last month Gaffetastic had this to say about Ted, “There is no one who knows more about how the United States Senate works and no one who is more ready to do this job for Delaware than Ted Kaufman. Over the years, he has earned the respect of those who have served, like Senator Bill Bradley of New Jersey and those who are still there, like Senator Chris Dodd of Connecticut. He will make a great partner with Senator Tom Carper.” So, then why is Reid still in charge? And kudos from Chris Dodd, you might not want to say that out loud.

We would also like to thank Ted for sharing his feelings and also about not running again in 2010. Ted has made it clear that his “emergence into the public spotlight will be brief and that he does not plan to run for re-election in 2010.” So, Ted will serve as Senator until 2010, when a special election will be held to fill the remaining four years of Gaffetastic’s term. Beau Biden, Delaware Attorney General, who is serving in Iraq, is considered a strong contender for the position. A strong contender, really? Stop the madness I say. Just say shoe in, legacy, dynasty, the usual stuff.

So, Ted I have this to say to you, WTH? Over the last few weeks, we saw Illinois and their Governor fiasco blow up and heard “selling a Senate seat” every five minutes. In New York, there is still an uproar over who the Senator will be. Will it be the popular guy or the gal that has the “name?” In my opinion as I have said before, Kennedy is trying to buy the seat. So, we have selling a Senate seat, buying a Senate seat and a seat warmer. But I have to say, I think this is a case of BFF. That’s right, Best Friends Forever. Now I am sure Ted may be a nice guy, but this should have been the outrage and it has pretty much been completely ignored.

As of this writing no word yet on whether Gaffetastic and Ted have gotten their BFF tattoos!

"When the stock market crashed, Franklin D. Roosevelt got on the television and didn't just talk about the, you know, the princes of greed. He said, "Look, here's what happened."
Senator Joe "Gaffetastic" Biden discussing the economy of the US.
Again the new vice-president showing his lack of wisdom on any topic. Good thing the press was slamming Governor Palin when this half wit was gaffing day after day, minute by minute!

"I'm, you know, actually Andrew Cuomo is someone I've known for many, many years and we've talked, you know, throughout this process, so, you know, we have a really good relationship and I admire the work he's doing now and what he's done, so I'm not really going to kind of criticize any of these other candidates, because I think there are a lot of people with great experience, and, you know, any one of which the governor could easily pick and they'd do a good job."
Caroline Kennedy on the other potential candidates for the senator of New York.
New York Times Interview
December 28, 2008
I got a headache from just reading this, you know!

"As I said, I mean, he loves the Senate, it's been, you know, the most, you know, rewarding life for him, you know, I'm sure he would love it to feel like somebody that he cared about had that same kind of opportunity, and I think he really – and so do I, think the impact he's had on, you know, working people, you know, the minimum wage fights that he's led, health care, I mean that's really – his example is something that, as I said, inspires me, because of the impact that he's been able to have. Whetherit's voting, civil rights, you know, across the board, and I think he's shown that the Senate can have that kind of impact on people's daily lives. Adn that's what's appealing about this opportunity, and I mean, I think, for those reasons he would love to have somebody that ecares about following, you know, that tradition. But I think in terms of me, you know, he doesn't care, you know, he's happy if I'm happy.
Again, the headache is bigger. Again good thing the press was slamming Governor Palin, when these magical words were being spoken, you know!

So, we are off to a new year. New gaffes, new predictions, new scandals and who knows what. Will we see "hope" and "change?" Yes we can or no we won't.
Happy New Year to all!

Oh Christmas Tree Lights....

Alright my burning question for 2008 is, how come when you plug in the Christmas tree lights (the strands) and then you plug them into the wall they all work. But when you put them on the tree, one strand does not want to cooperate and will not go on. And what is with that, when one burns out, they still work. Oh no they don't!

And am I a complete moron, but when you get that extra fuse, where in the freaking world does that go?

Oh Christmas tree lights...why do you not like me?

Trash or Treasure?

In 2009, we will not only be getting a new President, but also a new Congress. Yipeee! Many will be faces that we recognize (and maybe wish we didn't) and there will also be some new faces puttering through the halls.

Last week I saw a story on Fox news done by Brian Wilson. It was a horrible story, so horrible that I have to share, just in case you did not get to see it.

Brian Wilson went over to the Capitol. The story was based on "government waste" and boy was there a lot of waste going on. The biggest "wasters" were the House of Representitives. So much for an orderly House Madame Speaker. Every two years the hallways of the House buildings are transformed into "temporary warehouses." Some members may be moving down the hall and others may just be going home and not coming back. So, they nicely line the hallways of what they want to throw away in the trash bin.

There are the "Al Gore Offenders." These are the people that pile all sorts of "recyclable items" every place but the recycle bins. I guess this falls in line with "Do as I say, not as I Do!"

Lined in the halls you will find tons and tons of furniture that is headed to the garbage bin. There are desks, lamps, chairs, filing cabinets, book cases and may other items and some look brand new.

One of the items Brian Wilson picked up while "dumpster diving" was an ethics manual. In another pile there were file folders with documents inside. They were letters written to House Representatives. No shredding was involved.

Brian Wilson was told by a former Chief Administrative Officer, Scott Faukner, that this was less waste than previous years. A few years ago they started doing inventory control so that sending perfectly good stuff to the dump would not happen. Apparently that is not working out so well. In the story I saw a really nice bookcase that I would have taken myself.

It was also stated in the story that when it comes to collections and disposal of trash on the hill, a turf war is being waged. Over trash. Glad that is a top priority. Faukner decribed the disconnect between the Architect of the Capitol versus the House regarding trash pick-up, collection and disposal. He stated that the House needs to delegate some authority, until then there remains a disconnect between the two. Apparently the Architect of the Capitol is very protective of his domain regarding trash.

Also found in boxes that were headed for the dump were 500, yes, I said 500 brand new US Constitution booklets. Apparently that is what they think of it. Also located in a file was employee information. There was a copy of the social security number, driver's license and a voided check for direct deposit. So much for security there!

Of course even if Capitol Hill had a garage sale/fire sale it probably wouldn't bring in enough to pay for even one pork barrel project. But is is hard to see this, when so much is going to waste. We are in an economic downturn. People are losing their jobs, homes, cars, 401K's and here we see all sorts of items being chucked in the trash because that is the way things are done.

So as we ring in the New Year and the new Congress, it is nice to know that they are finding ways to spend our tax dollars or I should say, waste our tax dollars. So, bring your own furniture and if you move down the hall in two years or don't get re-elected, take it with you! If not, donate to the Goodwill or to a shelter. Stop wasting my tax dollars. Or give all Americans who pay taxes new furniture every two years.

And on a side note I wrote a letter to Madame Speaker about this. Oh and Madame Speaker, you can't blame this on President Bush!

Senate Seat Anyone?

I was reading some articles on the open Senate seats that are coming up in New York, Illinois and Delaware. I think this quote sums it up very well.

"We've seen the Senate become a House of Lords," said Reynolds. "We're seeing a seatwarmer in Delaware, a seat-seller in Illinois and we're making seat cushions in New York for kind of an aristocrat royalty of entitlement."  – Buffalo Congressman Tom Reynolds.

Tom Reynolds is retiring after years as a GOP power broker. He stated that the Democrats have shown problems with Senate appointments in Illinois, where Governor Blago may face criminal charges for allegedly trying to sell the seat.

In Delaware, an unknown congressional staffer was picked to the seat held by Senator "Gaffetastic" Biden. Many critics have said the Delaware pick is a placeholder until Biden's son returns from military service.

Now I would say that in New York, it is a "seat-buyer."

Buy versus Sell...What's the Diff?

The governor of Illinois and his scandal of wanting to sell the Illinois Senate seat has been all over the news as well as the governor himself. He refuses to resign and he feels that he has done nothing wrong.

Now let’s move across the country to New York. Hillary Clinton’s Senate seat is open and there are many people scrambling for the seat. The top name that has come out over the last few days has been Caroline Kennedy. There have been questions about her qualifications and what she can do for the state of New York. And apparently with the Kennedy name, her married name has been completely dropped, Schlossberg.

Today Mrs. Schlossberg took a trip update. She announced that she was interested in the Senate seat and was excited to be part of the process and that was pretty much it.

When reporters asked her questions such as:

  • What do you say to New Yorkers who think you’re not qualified?
  • Are you ready for this?
  • Have you ever been to Syracuse before?
  • You’re seeking public office and you don’t want to answer questions from reporters ma’am? When can we expect you to answer questions?
She gave just one response and ignored the rest. “Hopefully I can come back and answer all of your questions.”
That's it! What kind of answer was that? Nothing like getting to know the people! Stop the friendliness now.

Support for Kennedy

Kennedy has support on her side. Mayor Bloomberg’s consultant Josh Isay is helping Kennedy out with her mini campaign, even though it has been stated that it is not a campaign. Also helping out is Deputy Mayor Kevin Sheekey. He has been working the phones to snare support for Kennedy. Deputy Mayor Patti Harris, who is even closer to Bloomberg, is a longtime pal of Kennedy’s and has been quietly hawking her candidacy.
How nice for Kennedy with her "insider" friends.

Kennedy’s uncle Ted has forced members of his extended family to contemplate the possibility that the Senate would be left without a Kennedy for the first time in a half century and Caroline should get the seat. Her cousin Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., has strongly encouraged Caroline to go for the seat. And in doing so, she could be the first woman to lead the Kennedy dynasty.
Did you like the word forced? What is up with that? And between dynasty and legacy, move on. Oh the horror of no Kennedy in the Senate....ahhhhhh!

Harry Reid has said that he personally called governor Paterson urging him to appoint Kennedy to the seat. He also added that there have been a lot of stars from New York, Bobby Kennedy and Hillary Clinton. I guess Schumer did not make the cut.
No conflict of interest here. Zombie Reid is on the move. Shouldn't he be worrying about other things?

New York Assemblyman N. Nick Perry, the House Democratic whip, called Kennedy a "neatly packaged candidate for the governor, who could bring in cash and round off the statewide ticket with a revered name among Democrats."
Neatly packaged, WTH! Oh, she can bring money for all!

"There’s a lot at stake in the governor’s decision. Paterson may clearly look to someone who would provide some attraction to the ticket he would be on, and also someone who would be able to raise him money." Lee Miringoff, director of Marist Institute for Public Opinion.
Oh the money thing again.

Mitchell Moss, a New York University urban policy professor had this to say, "Caroline has a platinum name and enormous appeal to New Yorkers. She brings energy and charisma. She brings immediate access to President Obama and would carry the stature to overcome many challenges that a rookie senator would face."
Wow – immediate access to the President, energy and charisma, nothing says "Senator" like those words!

Non-Support
"The Senate Seat is not a legacy place. We haven’t had a Kennedy elected to office from New York state since 1964 and a lot of people would like to keep it that way." – Hank Sheinkopf
Not a legacy place, who knew?

Richard A. Viguerie, a leading conservative thinker and chairman of ConservativeHQ.com, suggested that the selection of Kennedy would reflect poorly on Paterson.

He also added, “It would show, once again, that many of our leaders simply don’t take their responsibilities seriously. Once again, politicians are acting like politicians – basing a decision this important on politics: Who can help get votes for Governor Paterson? Who will best hold the seat? Who can raise the most money?"

“How about these questions: Who can help protect New York and the rest of the country for attack? Who can help people recover the value of their homes? Who can help people keep their jobs? Isn’t anybody in the political establishment connected to reality?"
What a concept!

My Thoughts
So really what is the big difference between selling a Senate Seat and buying one? It seems Kennedy can help the governor with position, money, the president and her charisma. And I think the words "legacy" and "dynasty" need to be moved to the "hope" and "change" category of not wanting to hear for a long time.

Isn't this standard politics or not? Now I think Blago has a lot more problems, but on the Senate seat there seems to be the same path with the New York Senate seat, except buying not selling.

But speaking of legacy, how about this....how about Bill Clinton. Hillary goes to Governor Paterson and says that she wants to continue the "Clinton Legacy." Or she can say she wants to start her dyansty and eventually have Chelsea step in when Bill has one too many scandals. Having a former President in the Senate having to go up against the President and Reid, oh what fun that would be. And of course Hillary could tout the "historical" part all day long and push Obama out of the headlines....again!

Madoff and his contributions...Oh my!

Well while Madoff was brokering one of the largest Ponzi schemes in Wall Street History, it's nice to know he still found time to contribute to politicians and their campaigns. All to the tune of more then $400,000.

A review of campaign contributions at OpenSecrets.org shows that from 2005-2008, Madoff pumped well over $100,000 into the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, a political action committee guided by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Sens. Chuck Schumer of New York, Bob Menendez of New Jersey and Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota. Good job Chuck and Harry!

Schumer's own campaigns were on the receiving end of thousands of dollars from Madoff, his investment firm and members of his family. Schumer's office acknowledged the contributions and said he has pledged to give $6,000 in Madoff donations to charities. "He is donating to charity the money that he has received from Mr. Madoff, personally," Schumer spokesman Brian Fallon told FOXNews.com on Monday. How about he gives it back to the people that lost money. Sorry, he is no Saint for doing this! I love how he is "personally" donating the money.

Here is a partial list:
Massachusetts Rep. Ed Markey
New York Sen. Hillary Clinton
Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry
New York Rep. Carol Maloney
Massachusetts Sen. Ted Kennedy

New York Rep. Charles Rangel
New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine
New Jersey Sen. Frank Lautenberg
Former Missouri Sen. Dick Gephardt
Former New Jersey Sen. Bill Bradley

Madoff also hedged his bets and kicked in a few bucks to select Republicans, such as:

Former Texas Rep. Jack Fields
Arizona Sen. John McCain
Former N.Y. Rep. Vito Fossella
Former Louisiana Rep. "Billy" Tauzin
Former N.Y. Rep. Daniel Frisa
Former N.Y. Sen. Alfonse D'Amato

As for President-elect Barack Obama, records show Madoff, his family and associates only contributed a few thousand dollars in total to his campaign.

In Case You Missed It....Or Just Wanted to Ignore It!

Caroline Kennedy – Senate Seat
There has been a lot of rumblings about Caroline Kennedy wanting to fill the vacant seat of Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York. Is a "New York Camelot" not far behind?

The headlines are out there, "The daughter of John F. Kennedy, who wants to replace Hillary Rodham Clinton, is calling New York's governor and other key democrats to press her desire to extend the family dynasty."
It's a senate seat, not a dynasty to continue just because of your name!

Mitchell Moss, a New York University urban policy professor had this to say, "Caroline has a platinum name and enormous appeal to New Yorkers. She brings energy and charisma. She brings immediate access to President Obama and would carry the stature to overcome many challenges that a rookie senator would face."
And why does she have immediate access to Obama. Oh and he ain't President yet. What makes her so qualified that she can overcome "many challenges?" Her name?

An advisor to one of Kennedy's rivals for the seat had this to say, "It's a tough thing – you can't run against the little girl at the funeral. If she wants it, I don't see how anyone will stop her."
Okay, how about if the people of New York do not want her because of her qualifications and not her name recognition?

Eric Holder
The confirmation hearing for Eric Holder for Attorney General will begin on January 15, 2009. Of course the date has already changed, so it may change again. Here are some tidbits on the man who could be the Attorney General.

Last year he made $2.1 million dollars as a partner at Covington & Burling. They are a prominent Washington law firm with high-profile clients such as; UBS Financial Services, Merck & Co., and Hewlett Packard. Holder also made money from the boards he sat on; MCI and Eastman Kodak Company.
No word if Bill Clinton is a client of his.

Holder will take a salary cut to become the Attorney General. But he will bring in some major profits from leaving the private sector. Covington & Burling would pay Holder over $3.14 million dollars from his partner capital account, separation payments and deferred compensation. At this time, his net worth is $5.7 million dollars.
Nice work if you can get it.

Holder's middle name is "Himpton." Just in case you were wondering. He has three children, is a member of the historically black fraternity Sigma Pi Phi and his wife Sharon is a doctor. And according to the AP, delivered incoming White House chief of staff Rahm Emmanuel's daughter.
I won't comment on this.

Nancy Pelosi
Well, the speaker of the House felt it her duty to chime in on the House members caught up in the probe of Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich and his attempt to sell President-Elect Obama's Senate seat.

She does not believe that Illinois Democratic Reps. Rahm Emanuel and Jesse Jackson Jr., have done anything wrong.

"I know them. I think they haven't."
I think "they haven't," what is that?

"I don't know of the particulars of what Mr. Jackson was doing, but I do know that they're both people who are very honorable and served in Congress with great integrity."
Stop making me laugh Madame Speaker.

"Jackson is an honorable person and I know he has also disagreed with he governor's ethics."
Hey, what about Rahm. She seems to be sticking up more for Jackson.

And the speaker also added that as a busy person, she has not had time to keep track of all the "particulars" of the Blagojevich scandal.
Oh spare me. If it was a Republican, you would be out at that podium daily talking about "ethics" and "reform." As for being busy, besides giving away billions upon billions, busy – doing some Christmas shopping?

Vice President Dick Cheney
Cheney had some words to say about no attacks on the U.S. homeland.
"We've been able to stop or disrupt all further al Qaeda attacks on the U.S. homeland and that it required soem very tough decisions by the president."

Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA)
On the "Big 3" auto bailout, Senator Barbara Boxer of California had some words for the South. Boxer has been a regular critic of the automakers. She also made note on the Senate floor that southern states have offered hundreds of millions of dollars in tax breaks to woo foreign auto plants.
"Why don't I hear my colleagues from Tennessee and Mississippi out here saying, Whoa that was a bad mistake. Taxpayer shouldn't be on the hook. Something's wrong. Is this about the workers because they tough and they joined a union? What is this? It doesn't smell right."
You got that right that something doesn't smell right!"
